An early Rosenthal Kunst-Abteilung porcelain figurine, “Sommerritt” (“Summer Ride”), model K440, designed by Albert Caasmann in 1916 and likely produced in the 1920s.

The whimsical composition depicts a nude child or putto riding a large grasshopper on a rectangular base, rendered in soft naturalistic underglaze tones. The underside bears the Rosenthal Selb-Bavaria factory mark together with model number K440. A small additional painted mark is also present and is most plausibly a painter/decorator mark.

K440 is a documented Albert Caasmann design, so the model attribution does not depend on an artist signature. No visible Caasmann signature has been confirmed on this particular example, and it is therefore described as unsigned.

Please note the condition carefully: there is a small chip/loss to the tip of one of the grasshopper's upper antennae/feelers, visible in the close-up photograph, with exposed white porcelain at the break. Minor age-related wear is also present. No other major damage has been confirmed in the photographs reviewed so far; the fine legs, wings and extremities remain especially fragile and should be assessed from the detailed images.

“Sommerritt” is one of Caasmann's most distinctive fantasy subjects for Rosenthal, turning the grasshopper into an oversized mount beneath the small rider. A collectible early Rosenthal example, offered with its condition fully disclosed.
